Ultrasound Measurement of Pouch to Perineum Distance as a Guide in Determination of Hing or Low Imperforate Anus

Abstract

|
Nineteen newborn infants with imperforate anus were evaluated with ultrasound. The distance from the end of the distal pouch to perineum was measured and renal screening was also obtained.
Thirteen newborns had a pouch to perineum(P-P) distance of <10 mm, three had a P-P distance 11~15 mm, and three had P-P distance >15 mm.
All newborns with a P-P distance of 10~15 mm underwent colostomy.
We think US is generally more reliable for identification of the location of the distal rectal pouch egardless of whether or not it had fistula. At the same time, associated frenal anomalies were easily detected by quick screening of the renal
status.
